Protecting the integrity of our journalism

The integrity of Kenyan journalists, journalism, and the news media has come under increasing attack in recent years.

Widespread corruption within some newsrooms appears to be a major aspect of the perceived erosion of journalistic integrity. The most common questionable practice that is often cited at journalism workshops and seminars involves journalists (and/or people purporting to be journalists) soliciting or accepting various forms of kickbacks, gifts, cash rewards, or freebies from news makers in exchange for promises of favourable Press coverage.

The Nation Media Group takes these charges seriously and is committed to ensuring that journalists at our outlets are above board on questions of ethics and integrity.

To that end, the Nation Media Group promotes a policy of zero-tolerance to corrupt practices.

We would like to emphasise, in particular, that NMG editorial staff are expressly barred from accepting money or any form of payment or inducement for publication of news, opinion, or feature in any of our platforms. Such content is free of charge and is published purely on merit. Paid-for-content is clearly marked as advertisement or advertorial and the responsibility for collecting money for this lies with representatives from the Group’s advertising department.

Accordingly, the public is requested to bring to the attention of the management any cases where our reporters, photographers and editors may have violated our established ethical principles.

Such cases will be investigated and those who are found to have flouted our ethical principles will be dealt with firmly.

To report cases, please email integritywatch@nation.co.ke or call 254 (20) 2216255
