Nation pledges to support education sector

Nation Media Group has pledged to shift its corporate social responsibility focus to support the education sector.The announcement was made on Friday by the head of corporate and regulatory affairs Clifford Machoka during the donation of 170 mattresses, 100 bed sheets and foodstuffs to Foundation Friends of the Port Reiz School in Mombasa.

“Being around for 51 years as this institution has been despite many challenges is not easy. Even though our CSR has several other pillars such as community development, health, environment and education in itself, our focus moving forward is going to be education,” said Mr Machoka.

Mr Machoka said that education is at the heart of Nation’s business because by raising the literacy levels we are preparing the next generation of readers of our newspapers and television audiences, adding that NMG has an intrinsic duty to empower our nation through readership.The school head teacher Mercy Mwandenje said they lacked adequate teaching staff and a bus to facilitate smooth running of the institution.

“We have a population of 218 students, 80 of whom have special needs and our teaching staff who are trained in special needs are only 10,” she pointed out.
